Dean's Diary

By Dr. Michael Williams

Earning a business or management degree represents a professional development and career decision.

The rationales and motivations associated with acquiring either an undergraduate or graduate degree are unique to each student's personal, educational and professional goals. Frequently, students make aspirational decisions to enroll in business school.

During the School of Business and Management's Dean and Student Town Hall meetings, students often share that they believe earning a business or management degree will enable access to increased career opportunities as well as assist them in realizing their professional aspirations.

While potentially accurate, students can consider three approaches to evaluate a degree's relevance and value.

First, using a degree as a platform for lifelong learning accessing a degree's potential, in turn enabling its power as a professional credential to fuel career progress. Second, in order to evaluate a degree's power and potential, students can conduct an annual degree review evaluating its currency relative to their professional and career goals. Third, students can interview School of Business and Management alumni who've earned degrees students are considering and use the exchange as an educational catalyst for advancing career and professional progress.

As dean, I regularly consult with students, alumni and associated stakeholders concerning the purpose and value of earning a business and management degree. I invite you to contact me to discuss your educational plans and address your questions relative to your personal and professional goals.

Email me today to share your views. I look forward to hearing from you!
